These gay days it seems

In light of what we are seeing in the world today, specially in the US, I am always reminded of this song. In 76 this was an issue and it's half a century later and it feels more relevant than ever, why must people live in fear for being themselves, in fear of living when those around them do so without a thought for anyone else. We have allowed those loudest voices to rob us of compassion and love for one another, we have allowed them to brow beat us into hiding who we are, who our kids are, and in turn robbing us all of a future. I am not as kind as Rod about those that killed Georgie, in that time ignorance my have been a factor, today however this is not ignorance, this is malevolence, orchestrated hate.

If this song doesn't touch you, go take a hard look in the mirror, I bet you won't like what you see.

Oh yeahIn these days of changing waysSo called liberated daysA story comes to mind of a friend of mine
Georgie boy was gay I guessNothin' more or nothin' lessThe kindest guy I ever knew
His mother's tears fell in vainThe afternoon George tried to explainThat he needed love like all the rest
Pa said there must be a mistakeHow can my son not be straightAfter all I've said and done for him
Da da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duh
Leavin' home on a Greyhound busCast out by the ones he lovesA victim of these gay days it seems
Da da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duh
Georgie went to New York townWhere he quickly settled downAnd soon became the toast of the great white way
Accepted by Manhattan's eliteIn all the places that were chicNo party was complete without George
Along the boulevards he'd cruiseAnd all the old queens blew a fuseEverybody loved Georgie boy
Da da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duh
The last time I saw George aliveWas in the summer of seventy-fiveHe said he was in love I said I'm pleased
George attended the opening nightOf another Broadway hypeBut split before the final curtain fell
Deciding to take a short cut homeArm in arm they meant no wrongA gentle breeze blew down fifth avenue
Da da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duh
Out of a darkened side street cameA New Jersey gang with just one aimTo roll some innocent passer-byThere ensued a fearful fightScreams rang out in the nightGeorgie's head hit a sidewalk cornerstone
A leather kid, a switchblade knifeHe did not intend to take his lifeHe just pushed his luck a little too far that night
The sight of blood dispersed the gangA crowd gathered, the police cameAn ambulance screamed to a halt on fifty-third and third
Da da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duh
Georgie's life ended thereBut I ask who really caresGeorge once said to me and I quote
He said "never wait or hesitateGet in kid, before it's too lateYou may never get another chance'Cause youth a mask but it don't lastLive it long and live it fast"Georgie was a friend of mine
Da da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duh
Da da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duhDa da da da da da duh
Oh Georgie stay,Don't go awayGeorgie please stayYou take our breath awayOh Georgie stay,Don't go awayGeorgie please stayYou take our breath awayOh Georgie stay,Don't go awayGeorgie, Georgie stay (please stay)You take our breath away

Love and Happiness

At this time of year when everyone is reminded that being a human being is being kind and loving, forgiving and tolerant, I feel that it's all bullshit, this is not a state for the holidays, this should be a constant state and something we should strive towards in our everyday lives. I blogged about being a "mensch" and perhaps it's good to remind ourselves what it means to be one. what follows is that blog A while ago I mentioned being a “mensch” and I was not really clear on what it means. A good friend and client brought this in for me, it’s part of an article written by Charlotte Cohen, and it sums it up well. What is a honourable mensch It is a voice, and the understanding behind it. It is the eyes, and the intelligence behind them. It is the recognition that support is needed, and asked for, giving it And the kindness that lies behind all of that. It’s keeping quiet when one ought and speaking when one should and knowing the difference. It’s giving pr

There is a song by Bruce Springsteen from the album Nebraska that goes like this My little sister's in the front seat with an ice cream cone My ma's in the backseat sittin' all alone As my pa steers her slow out of the lot for a test drive down Michigan Avenue Now my ma she fingers her wedding band And watches the salesman stare at my old man's hands He's tellin' us all 'bout the break he'd give us if he could but he just can't Well if I could I swear I know just what I'd do Now mister the day the lottery I win I ain't ever gonna ride in no used car again Now the neighbors come from near and far As we pull up in our brand new used car I wish he'd just hit the gas and let out a cry and tell 'em all they can kiss our asses goodbye My dad he sweats the same job from mornin' to mornin' Me I walk home on the same dirty streets where I was born Up the block I can hear my little sister in the front seat blowin' that horn The soun
